He next earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo followed by a master’s in engineering from the State University of New York. Finally, Smith graduated with an MBA from the Simon School at the University of Rochester.

Smith held several positions from 1972 until 1998 with a company known as Global Crossing North America Inc. Said positions included: controller and chief information officer.
